"If the Rev-ErbA alpha is completely gone‚ it breaks down the system to control the dopamin‚ meaning that high levels of dopamin will be maintained. This is when illnesses like bipolar disorders appear."
The protein is also released in different quantities during different parts of a day.
The researchers say this is why people may be prone to mood swings at certain hours of the day‚ whether they be mornings or evenings.
"The amount of dopamins is important‚ but I think that the sort of rhythmic vibrations that are shown depending on whether it's day or night is much more important physiologically."
The researchers believe that if they can control this protein‚ they will be able to create new medication to treat various emotional disorders‚ such as depression and panic disorders.
The findings have been published in the online edition of the science journal Cell.
