요약정보
This rock has been brought to the Korea Polar Research Institute for a detailed analysis.
It was found in the southeastern city of Jinju in Gyeongsangnam-do Province last week.
Weighing 9.3 kilograms‚ the rock is 18-centimeters wide‚ 14-centimeters long and 12-centimeters in height.
After researchers measured the magnetic forces of the rock‚ they claimed that it contained 100 times more steel than that of a typical rock found on Earth.
While a typical rock shows a magnetic measurement of 3 or 4‚ the figure for this one soared to over 400.
They say that this proves it is from space.
"We can't see inside the rock right now‚ so we can't guarantee it 100 percent. But the chances are very high‚ at about 99 percent."
Burn marks were also found on the surface of the rock‚ which is believed to have happened as it entered the Earth's atmosphere.
The rock is believed to be the same type that fell in Russia last year.
"We are pretty sure that this is a meteorite. So we're going to move onto the classification procedure."
The rock will be studied for about a week in this laboratory.
Using sohisticated equipment‚ including high resolution electron microscopes‚ the analysis is expected to unveil the components of the rock.
If it proves to be a meteorite‚ it would be the first to fall in Korea in 71 years.
It would also be five times larger than the one that fell in 1943‚ and could reveal secrets behind the formation of the solar system.
