요약정보
Over the past week‚ Northeast Asia has been rocked by a series of earthquakes‚ starting last Wednesday on the western seaboard of Japan‚ followed by others in Taiwan.
On Sunday‚ China's Sichuan region was hit with a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that has left more than 200 people dead or missing.
Just a day later‚ a magnitude 4.9 quake struck near waters off of Sinan‚ South Jeolla Province here in Korea.
But the Korean temblor was not directly related to the recent series of quakes though as Korea has several fault lines with one lying along the east coast down to the South Sea and inland fault lines crossing through the Hamgyeong‚ Gangwon and Gyeongsang Provinces.
With Japan on the border of major plates in the Pacific‚ Eurasia and North America it's commonly thought that Korea is NOT prone to large-scale earthquake.
But we cannot rule out the possibility of an earthquake with a greater magnitude as the total number of earthquakes has been on the rise since 1979‚ when the country started recording and analyzing seismic activities.
How devastating would the results of a strong quake be for Korea?
Experts say magnitude 6.5 quake is theoretically the strongest possible earthquake that could hit Korea given its geological structure.
They estimate that a quake that strong hitting Seoul would yield 7-thousand fatalities and in Korea's second largest port city of Busan‚ an estimated 34-thousand people would be injured.
The higher-than-expected numbers can be attributed to the fact that only one out of five buildings in Korea is quake-proof.
While a large proportion of the country's infrastructure‚ including seaports and airports are built to be quake-proof‚ schools and many residential buildings are vulnerable.
Tsunami shelters may also be necessary‚ as a tsunami coming from an earthquake in Japan could reach Korea within two hours.
