The Korea Export Insurance Corporation is moving to provide credit guarantees to companies that produce electronic games‚ television dramas and theater plays for export.
A majority of small and medium-sized production companies are facing difficulties securing loans from banks amid the credit crunch. The state-run insurance agency noted that the credit guarantee system is also aimed at boosting exports of Korean productions. Until now‚ the agency‚ backed by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy‚ has only insured loans made in the movie industry by guaranteeing up to 90 percent of the principal. Along with the Korean Film Council‚ the agency introduced the initiative in late 2007 enabling the sector to thrive and easily gain loans. The company last year helped eight movies‚ including the box office success "A Frozen Flower‚" secure production loans of some 17 billion won‚ or about 11 million US dollars.
The agency says it will add the other sectors as soon as possible. It is even considering raising the 90-percent guarantee threshold to 100 percent. This means that if a product fails to achieve financial success in the market‚ lenders will be able to retrieve their principal as loans will be fully guaranteed by the state-owned insurance company. However‚ the agency noted that it will apply this in accordance with production companies' track records in sales and competitiveness.
