"Baidu.com" is one of China's most heavily used search engines one which some 100 million internet users log on to each day.
Type in the word‚ "beautiful women" and one is exposed to thousands of provocative images filling the screen. But like other portal sites it does not have any system that prevents underage users from accessing such areas of the website.
[Interview : Lang Yishen‚ Elementary school teacher] "Students can easily find these images on Baidu or Google‚ which they log on to everyday."
[Interview : Parent ] " Many parents are concerned‚ as such content is extremely harmful to teenagers."
Since the start of the new year China has already shut down more than 90 websites for hosting pornographic and other obscene content and vowed it will completely uproot such sites by early next month.
But its censorship efforts don't stop there as political blog portals that tend to be critical of the Chinese government are being targeted for closure as well. The shutdown is raising doubts many fearing the moves have more to do with silencing dissenters than with protecting the public as the economy slows and China nears the 20th anniversary of the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989.
