Korean researchers have devised a fourth-generation wireless communication technology they say is 36 times faster than existing high-speed Internet connections.
It's so fast they named it ''Nola‚'' Korean for ''surprising.''
Kim Jeesoo brings us this report.
The screen on the left is a computer using an ordinary high-speed Internet connection.
The screen on the right is a computer connected through a fourth-generation wireless transmission technology called ''Nola.''
Through an ordinary high-speed Internet connection‚ you can download a movie in about 10 minutes.
However‚ through Nola‚ you can download multiple movies simultaneously and one download takes only 2 seconds.
Nola was developed by the government-funded Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and can transmit up to 3.6 gigabytes of information in one second.
This means that one MP3 song can be downloaded in one hundredth of a second while the contents of an encyclopedia can be downloaded in 10 seconds.
''Up to now‚ transmitting speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second have been developed by countries such as the U.S.‚ Japan and European countries. However‚ this time‚ we have developed a technology that is 36 times faster.''
This makes it possible that Korean technology will set the standard for 4th generation mobile communication.
''With existing technologies such as CDMA and WIBRO‚ we had to import and add our own applications. However‚ this time‚ we developed Nola totally on our own‚ and we are the first in the world to do it.''
Nola has about 10 international and domestic patents pending and will be ready for commercial use in 2012.
