Venture out to Inje‚ Gangwon Province‚ and this is what you can expect to find. Thousands of rows of Alaskan pollack are hung like laundry to dry under the sun and cold wind. This region accounts for 70 percent of the country's dried pollack production and this is just one of the 20 facilities in the area.
Workers brave the frigid weather to hang what will become the fruits of their labor‚ dried Alaskan pollack that is nutritious and rich in protein. This village is said to have the perfect climate for drying as temperatures are almost always at subzero throughout the winter and the breeze makes for the best recipe.
But this year‚ not all farms are faring well. Whereas past years saw a bumper harvest‚ the current economic downturn brought on by the soaring won-dollar exchange rate has had a spillover effect even in some farms that are located in remote mountain areas. Also the co-op in Inje says that the catch of Alaskan pollack in the eastern coast has dwindled sharply and the amount of imported fish has also gone down due to the tough economic times.
Such cuts in supply could affect future prices of these dried Alaskan pollack‚ which after going through a series of freezing and thawing will go on the dinner tables of Koreans in March and April.
