European stocks plunged on Wednesday reversing earlier gains in a second day of volatility as ongoing concerns about euro-zone debt contagion and a weak US growth outlook outweighed the prospect of continued low interest rates in the world's largest economy.
Market chatter of credit rating downgrades in Europe‚ France in particular‚ late in the session made investors even more jittery and sent equities deep into the red.
London's FTSE 100 fell by more than 3.1 percent‚ Germany's DAX plummeted more than 5.1 percent and in Paris the CAC 40 lost nearly 5.5 percent closing at its lowest since July 2009.
