Growing concerns over a possible debt crisis in Spain and Italy have jolted European markets.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero postponed his vacation Tuesday to seek ways to get the country out of trouble‚ and over in Rome‚ Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti convened an emergency meeting with the country's Financial Stability Board.
The yield‚ or spread‚ on ten-year Spanish bond rose 14 basis points from a day earlier to 6.3-3 percent Tuesday morning‚ while Italian bonds also went up by more than 17 basis points to 6.1-7 percent.
This has pushed the difference in yield over benchmark German bunds‚ to above 400 basis points‚ a record since the euro was introduced some twelve years ago.
When this figure gets bigger‚ the possibility of the country guaranteeing the principal and interest comes down‚ meaning that country will pay more interest in the market.
