Trade officials from Korea and the United States have formally opened the third round of FTA talks in Seattle.
Signaling the start of what many expect to be an arduous process Korea's top negotiator Kim Jong-hoon and his U.S. counterpart Wendy Cutler shook hands at around 9 a.m.‚ local time.
At the third round FTA talks‚ Seoul and Washington are expected to engage in heated discussions over sensitive items such as rice‚ textiles‚ automobiles and pharmaceuticals.
In fact the first day of free trade negotiations saw the two sides struggling to reach a consensus.
Negotiators… in charge of each area met separately for eight hours… and wrangled over which business sector to protect or to open.
In the case of agricultural goods… the U.S. wants Korea to completely open its market including Korea's staple food… rice.
Seoul has reiterated that rice non-negotiable and has submitted a tariff cut proposal… which lists home-grown farm goods that should be excluded from the FTA.
A delegation of more than 200 commerce experts from Seoul are meeting with their U.S. counterparts… to discuss the nuts and bolts of the bilateral trade pact… which encompasses 17 trade areas.
The two sides have until Saturday to narrow their differences… if not come to a full agreement on service and investment sectors.
The U.S. is demanding that Korea allow more multinational companies into its country and be impartial when imposing business restrictions on conglomerates or small firms.
