요약정보
Samsung Electronics has recently signed a deal with four U.S. cellular service providers to introduce Korea's wireless Internet technology WiBro to the American market.
Kim Min-jung tells us why this deal is being hailed as a landmark achievement for Korea's IT industry.
Korea has put its best foot forward in the world's biggest communications market the United States by introducing its own portable Internet technology‚ WiBro.
Samsung Electronics will provide WiBro equipment to American cellular service provider Sprint Nextel in partnership with Intel and Motorola.
The four companies will build a three-billion-dollar network in the U.S by 2008.
Samsung says WiBro is more than a year ahead of the rival technologies of competitors such as Intel and Motorola‚ and is confident about WiBro's marketability.
RECORDED: "Sprint has 45 million subscribers‚ more than 39 million in all of Korea. We expect WiBro's market value to expand to about 12 billion U.S. dollars by 2010."
But what is WiBro‚ anyway?
Known as mobile WiMax outside of Korea‚ WiBro is the country's own brand of wireless broadband technology.
It allows Internet use even in a car running at 100 kilometers an hour‚ and its land-line broadband speed is fast enough to download dozens of MP3 files in one minute.
KIM MIN-JUNG‚ REPORTER: "WiBro‚ the so-called fourth generation in wireless technology‚ has been touted as a “next big thing". And industry experts say the latest deal could serve as a big stepping stone for Korea to lead the global market."
RECORDED: "Korea is a big exporter of mobile handsets‚ but isn't a big seller of other wireless telecommunications equipment. This deal is significant in that Korea has sold not only gadgets‚ but also the core technology‚ chips and the system as a whole package. Korea has found a new growth engine."
The latest deal could have an impact far beyond U.S. shores in helping WiBro make inroads into other countries down the road.
Japan‚ Great Britain and Brazil are already showing interest in the adoption of commercial WiBro service.
