The Korean government says it will provide 200 million U.S. dollars in aid to Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Vice Finance Minister Kwon Tae-shin announced the proposal‚ in a speech to members of the Inter-American Development Bank‚ or IDB in Brazil.
At the annual board of governors meeting‚ Vice Minister Kwon said the fund will assist IDB countries to fight against poverty‚ and help with technology‚ and natural disaster prevention measures.
The money‚ he added‚ will come from a 140-million-dollar trust fund Korea set up‚ when it became an IDB member in 2005.
Through its lending program‚ the IDB hopes to foster sustainable economic and social development.
