At Monday's parliamentary oversight hearings Democratic Party lawmakers on the National Assembly's judiciary committee said National Intelligence Service agents posted some 55-thousand comments on Twitter and other social networking services against opposition candidates Moon Jae-in and Ahn Cheol-soo in the weeks leading up to the presidential election last December.
The DP lawmakers centered their comments around senior prosecutor Yoon Seok-yeol‚ who said the spy agency posted tweets in favor of ruling party candidate Park Geun-hye and was leading a special investigation into the the NIS scandal.
Yoon was fired on Friday for arresting three NIS officials related to the case without first getting approval from the Justice Ministry and is now facing an internal affairs probe for insubordination.
The DP claims his dismissal shows the government attempted to meddle in the high-profile probe.
The ruling Saenuri Party said Yoon's dismissal was in line with due process‚ as he failed to comply with the correct legal procedures.
The DP also said that the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae pulled strings to exclude Yoon from the investigation‚ just as it did with former prosecutor general Chae Dong-wook.
Chae stepped down from his post last month amid rumors he fathered a child out of wedlock.
The DP believes Cheong Wa Dae forced Chae to quit because his investigative team indicted a former NIS chief in June on charges of violating the election law.
The NIS is not the only one accused of meddling in the election.
An opposition lawmaker raised allegations last week that the military's secretive cyber warfare command unit posted messages online in favor of ruling party candidate Park Geun-hye ahead of the election.
The military has launched an investigation into the allegations and is expected to announce the results this week.
