요약정보
Restoring Japan's relationship with the United States.. to regain its diplomatic standing in the Asia Pacific region.
That's the goal Prime Minister Abe emphasized after winning the parliamentary election last month.
Political pundits say Tokyo is aiming to improve its bilateral ties with China and Korea‚ which have deteriorated due to ongoing territorial disputes‚ based on strong Japan-U.S. relations.
[Interview : Shinzo Abe‚ Japanese Prime Minister] "I believe that strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance‚ the pillar of Japan's diplomacy‚ once again‚ is the first step toward rebuilding the country's diplomatic security."
During his visit to Washington‚ Prime Minister Abe will try to impress upon President Barack Obama.. Japan's stance in its dispute with Beijing over a disputed island chain in the East China Sea‚ as China increases pressure on the Japanese government.
Another issue the two leaders are likely to discuss is the Trans-Pacific Partnership‚ or the TPP‚ a multi-national trade agreement Washington is pushing ahead with.. to keep China in check.
At this point‚ Japan seems to be reluctant to join the agreement‚ as many in Japan believe that the trade volume within the TPP won't be sufficient to provide the island country with substantial benefits.
So‚ the two sides are expected to discuss what they would give and take for Tokyo to join the agreement.
Meanwhile‚ as a gesture to enhance ties with Korea‚ Prime Minister Abe will send a delegation‚ led by former Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga‚ to Seoul on Friday.
The delegation will meet with President-elect Park Geun-hye‚ and is reportedly expected to deliver a letter from Abe that includes the message that "Korea is Japan's most important neighbor."
