South Korea has bumped up the budget for its inter-Korean cooperation fund and the Unification Ministry in the new year to enhance relations with its Northern neighbor.
The Ministry of Unification said the inter-Korean cooperation fund will increase by 9.1 percent from last year to nearly 2-trillion won‚ or roughly 1.8 billion U.S. dollars and the ministry's own general budget will increase by 4.4 percent to a little over 222-billion won.
The ministry also said funds have been set aside for the Gaeseong Industrial Complex‚ reunions of families separated by the Korean War‚ support for North Korean defectors and other forms of humanitarian aid.
The South's incoming president‚ Park Geun-hye‚ is expected to take a softer line on the North than her predecessor‚ which in turn could boost cooperation between the two Koreas.
