The number of farmers in Korea continues to plummet.
Just in the last year‚ more than a hundred thousand workers left the farming sector according to statistics released Thursday by the Korea Rural Economic Institute.
That comes on top of a drop of a million workers over the past ten years ‚ and a 75% decrease in the number of farming households over the course of a generation.
[Interview : Kang Jin-koo‚ Senior Researcher
Rural Development Administration] "In rural areas there are no gynecologists. Also there are no cultural facilities to enjoy."
The Institute added that relatively low wages in the farming industry means the trend is likely to continue.
Currently‚ farmers earn just over 10-million won or roughly 9-thousand U.S. dollars annually significantly less than the average annual salary of a college graduate expected to be closer to 20‚000 dollars.
[Interview : Kang Jin-koo‚ Senior Researcher
Rural Development Administration] "Farms can implement new management skills and harvest more profitable crops."
As of the end of 2011‚ just six-percent of Korea's entire population remained on the fields to farm‚ but the government estimates around 70-thousand more farmers to abandon the fields this year.
