US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called on Myanmar to end any illicit military‚ nuclear and ballistic missile cooperation with North Korea that may violate UN sanctions saying better relations with the US will only be possible if the government in Myanmar respects the international consensus against the spread of nuclear weapons.
Following a meeting with President Thein Sein in Myanmar's capital of Nay Pyi Taw‚ Clinton said Myanmar's leader has vowed to uphold its UN obligations with respect to North Korea.
Washington's top officials also said that US engagement with Myanmar should not be seen as a threat to China apparently responding to a Chinese newspaper report a day earlier that said China is open to Myanmar seeking closer ties to the west‚ but not at the expense of Beijing's interests.
Later in the day‚ the top US diplomat met Myanmar civil rights icon and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi‚ who has spent much of the last 21 years in jail or under house arrest.
Hillary Clinton is the first US secretary of state to visit Myanmar in 50 years.
