요약정보
From early next year‚ Korea will start building a naval forward-base on Ulleung Island which is the closest territory to Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo.
According to ruling Grand National Party lawmaker Chung Mee-Kyung Wednesday the base is aimed at improving Korea's defense of the East Sea and will strengthen the country's sovereign control of the Dokdo islets in the light of Japan's persistent territorial claims to the islets.
The government will invest about 350 billion won or some 300 million US dollars building the base and the construction is scheduled to be completed by 2015.
The lawmaker also says that a 300 meter-long navy pier will be built on the island to accommodate the nation's largest landing ship‚ the Dokdo‚ which is about 200 meter-long as well as high-tech Aegis destroyers.
The deployment means Korean warships can reach Dokdo faster than vessels from Japanese bases.
Currently‚ the closest port to the islets is about four hours away but the new base in Ulleung Island is expected to cut traveling time to just 90 minutes.
Japan's naval base closest to Dokdo is on the Oki Islands which are about three hours away.
Japan's continuous false territorial claims to Dokdo have long been a cause of diplomatic tensions with Korea.
Korea rejects Japan's claims over Dokdo because the country reclaimed sovereignty over its territory‚ including Dokdo when it regained independence from Japan's war-time colonization.
