Perhaps this is why a special class was held recently at a childcare center in Jongno.

] "The Jongno-gu volunteer center joined with many embassies in the district to teach children about the culture and history of other countries. We joined the project with high hopes as well."
There are banners in the classroom spelling out "the Netherlands" along with cultural items from the country.
Making his entrance is the special lecturer for today‚ who is none other than Ambassador Paul Menkveld of the Netherlands.
The children welcome the ambassador with a round of applause.
How will the ambassador deliver his inspiring message to the children[Interview : ] "So how do we know about that time if there were no photos and no movies[Interview : Paul Menkveld‚ Ambassador of the Netherlands to Korea] "It's very nice to be involved in the community that we work in and we have an embassy in Seoul‚ and work in this district‚ so it's very nice to know what's happening here‚ and part of it is these day care centers for small children. So when they invited us to tell stories about our own country‚ I happily obliged. It's very nice to do."

One of the ships sailing to go and get some pepper came into a big storm. Heavy winds‚ down poured much rain‚ they didn't know where they were‚ it was totally dark but some of the crew members they managed to swim ashore and this island was Jeju island."
The children become even more animated as the ambassador brings out local specialties from the Netherlands.

] "With the ambassadors coming in to talk to them personally‚ the children have come to enjoy the entire process. They ask questions and participate spontaneously to actively absorb knowledge."
The Netherlands is an exotic country to the children. The ambassador brings them closer to his homeland little by little with his anecdotes.
From windmills and pepper to tulips‚ the children learn about the Netherlands through and through.

During the mid Joseon dynasty‚ a ship sailing from the Netherlands to Japan was shipwrecked in Jeju Island. One of the crewmen‚ Hendrick Hamel‚ wrote a book on his stay in Korea.
The Journal of Hendrick Hamel became the first book to tell the world about Korea.
