요약정보
Korea has been battered by heavy downpours since Friday and this continued right into Monday and it looks like for the rest of this week.
The National Emergency Management Agency said on Monday that a monsoon front is making its way northward from the country's southern regions towards Gyeonggi Province‚ just South of Seoul‚ as well as South Chungcheong Province.
According to the agency‚ a heavy rain warning has been issued for the South Chungcheong county of Taean and city of Boryeong and a heavy rain advisory is in effect for the rest of the province along with southern Gyeonggi.
The Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces were the hardest hit by the recent downpours with the city of Suncheon recording 506 millimeters of accumulated rain‚ Gunsan 419 millimeters‚ and Daejeon about 350.
At least 12 people have died and three are reportedly missing‚ mostly falling victim to landslides and water rifts triggered by the heavy rain.
Meanwhile‚ the agency says that 192 houses have been flooded and at least partially destroyed and more than 35-thousand hectares of farmland across the nation has been inundated.
However‚ efforts are underway to restore the farmlands‚ houses‚ and roads affected by the floods.
Although the number of people forced from their homes peaked at 441‚ about three-fourths of them have returned home and a third of the damaged farmlands have been restored.
And as additional seasonal precipitation is in the forecast until Friday‚ those who live in houses near mountains should evacuate immediately‚ and rice farmers are advised to refrain from venturing out to check water levels in their fields.
[Interview : Kim Yeon-ji‚ Reporter
yjkim@arirang.co.kr] "The torrential downpours that hit Korea caused mud slides and flash floods in the nation. And here‚ as you can see‚ the water level of the Han River rose because of the rain. The Korea Meteorological Administration says up to 250 millimeters more rain is expected by the end of Monday.
