New data shows that the United States has donated over 1-billion US dollars to North Korea over the last 16 years.
According to a report released by the Congressional Research Service on Sunday‚ Washington is estimated to have given over 1.3 billion dollars in humanitarian aid to Pyeongyang‚ including food‚ energy and medical supplies since 1995.
The US has provided assistance to the North every year except for 2006‚ the year it conducted its first nuclear test.
Last year alone‚ around 600-thousand dollars worth of medical supplies were shipped to the North to help with the flood recovery operations there.
And of the 1.3 billion dollars‚ more than half was spent on food aid‚but this has been on hold since March 2009 after North Korea demanded US humanitarian workers leave the country.
And help from the US came in many forms.
Over the 16-year period‚ Washington is estimated to have spent around 1-hundred-46-million dollars in providing crude oil to the country‚ part of an agreement reached at the six-party nuclear talks‚ plus an additional 10-million dollars on other humanitarian assistance such as medical supplies.
Moreover‚ around 4-hundred-3.7 million dollars was used for the establishment of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization‚ which was set up for the construction of a light-water reactor in the North.
Regarding Pyeongyang's open request for food assistance‚ the research agency speculated that the food situation there could actually be worsening or the regime might be preparing for further isolation from the international society especially if another nuclear test is conducted in the future.
The report added that North Korea received around 12-million tons of international food aid from 1995 to 2009‚ with China and South Korea each providing around 27 percent of the total‚ followed by the US with 18 percent and Japan‚ with 11 percent.
