Rice is the staple food of Koreans‚ and so rice farming is of the utmost importance. The highlight of the farming season is monaegi- the transplanting of rice seedlings.

Nonghyup Agricultural Museum] "Rice farming in Korea began in the Bronze Age. That is about 3‚000 years from now. Monaegi is an agricultural technique that came into popular use in the mid to late Joseon Dynasty."
We're at a village in Goesan county‚ South Chungcheong Province.
These days‚ monaegi is done by machines. This is the rice transplanter used in monaegi.
The rice transplanter has greatly reduced the need for labour.
[Interview : Choi Jong-ha‚ Farmer] "Working with machines means less labour and time needed. A field of 3‚306 m² can be planted in 1 hour. It's good to save labou"r.
In a different rice field‚ a farmer is busy transplanting his rice seedlings. What used to require an army of workers can now be done alone thanks to the machine.
[Interview : Noh Su-hyeon‚ Farmer] "40 people had to work on the same field to transplant seedlings by hand. With machines‚ the same amount of work can be done by one person. Labour is scarce these days‚ so it's impossible to work without machines."
[Interview : Jeong Dae-cheol‚ Farmer] "These days‚ it's hard to gather people to work together‚ and it makes me sad to see the old bonds between people being weakened‚ even if the work has become easier."
It's time now for a much awaited moment by all farmers!

[Interview : ] "Let's eat saecham!"
Saecham means food eaten during breaks in between work. Today's saecham is Kimchi Pajeon and makgeolli‚ perfect companions to a hard day's work. The farmers rest and fill their hungry stomachs.
[Interview : Kim Tae-yong‚ Farmer] "When we run out of energy while working‚ we take a break and eat saecham to regain our energy."
The wisdom of our ancestors shows through in their custom of saecham. Farming is physically draining work‚ and saecham helps to replenish energy.

Nonghyup Agricultural Museum] "The saecham has two roles: to provide rest and replenish energy.
It is a custom which is part of the monaegi tradition."
Meanwhile‚ Dunyul Village is in a rush of activity‚ with students from an elementary school here to help out in the monaegi season.

[Interview : ] "We're here to transplant rice seedlings!"
It‘s not easy to see monaegi being done by hand in the traditional method these days. Now‚ it has become a popular learning activity for children to experience traditional agriculture.

[Interview : ] "Gather the seedlings together and stick them in the field. That's it‚ not too deep. Stick them in gently."
[Interview : Jeong Jae-won‚ Visitor] "The mud is squishy and difficult to walk on. That's the hardest part."

The rows have to be well arranged when monaegi is done by hand‚ so as to harvest the most crop from the field.
[Interview : Hong Jun-yeong‚ Visitor] "It is amazing that people used to plant rice by hand."
[Interview : Lee Jong-seung‚ Visitor] "It is amazing that the rice we eat is grown like this."
With the monaegi complete‚ there is one more thing to do. It is to scatter freshwater snails across the field. Freshwater snails play a crucial role in rice farming.
[Interview : Jo Myeong-ok‚ Principal of an elementary school] "This rice planting activity will cultivate a love for the nation's agricultural villages and understanding of our farmers."
We're now at Gongju in South Chungcheong province.
This is the Agricultural Technology Center!
The center is filled with agricultural machinery. Monaegi season is when the center is at its busiest.
