About 150 military officials‚ including Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin and various commanders‚ gathered on Friday to review Korea's combat readiness and discuss the implementation of the National Defense Reform Plan.
Presiding over the first all-army commanders' meeting since his inauguration‚ Minister Kim stressed the need to build a unified army with strong‚ combat-ready soldiers to counter existing threats‚ voicing concerns over the possibility of further North Korean provocations.
Kim said that although there are currently no unusual signs from the North‚ with the blue crab season drawing near there's a higher chance of Pyeongyang trespassing across the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea under the disguise of fishing activities.
On the same note‚ Kim called on field commanders of each division to report their defense capability status and urged them to maintain a ready-to-fight military readiness.
[Interview : Yoo Nak-jun‚ ROK Marine Corps Commander] "K-9 artilleries have been deployed and the fire power gap between North and South Korea has now been narrowed by more than three folds. We are preparing all measures to step up joint trainings by mobilizing specialized staffs from across units."
Shortly after the meeting‚ President Lee Myung-bak convened the officials‚ and called for swift defense reform while ordering them promote the reform plan to the Korean people and related organizations.
President Lee went on to say that "although some are against the military reform plan we must approach closer to the people and overcome the differences‚" encouraging military officials to complete the reform as initially planned and as early as possible.
Lee also said the North Korean military will be preparing for fresh provocations‚ but he feels secure as each branch is working hard to train for various scenarios to efficiently counter any possible attack by the communist neighbor.
