요약정보
In September last year‚ Korea was pounded by Typhoon Kompasu‚ during which hundreds of trees were toppled and uprooted.
And in light of the country's 66th National Arbor Day also known as "Sikmogil" in Korean on April 5th this year hundreds of people gathered at Seoripool Park in Seocho district to add a little greenery to this tree-less park.
[Interview : Jin Ik-chul‚ Mayor of Seocho district] "We learned a lesson from last year's typhoon and we want to carry out what we have learned. Residents will take care of this park. They donated these trees and they are planting them on their own."
Every year on Arbor Day here in Korea‚ nationwide tree planting campaigns take place not only at parks but at government offices‚ workplaces and schools.
For most of its history‚ Korea and its agricultural society has always considered April a good time for planting.
[Interview : Ra Jeong-ran‚ Participant
] "I was sad to see so many trees uprooted and toppled whenever I passed by here. So‚ I was very happy when I heard that the district was hosting this tree planting event."
Following the aftermath of Typhoon Kompasu last year the day has become something more than just re-foresting mountains and hills for these participants.
People were thrilled that they could get together and take part in something that helps the environment.
[Interview : Kan Ho-won‚ Participant] "It is the period of green growth and I believe humans can live well only when the environment is doing well. So‚ we are going to try hard to protect the environment."
With climate change‚ the greenhouse effect and other environmental hazards‚ it is vitally important to plant more trees.
And this event provided a day for people to spend time outdoors rebuilding a local park and doing their part to help save the earth.
[Reporter : Lee Ji-yoon‚ jiyoonjlee@arirang.co.kr] "Participants hope that tree planting efforts will not just end on Arbor Day‚ but become an ongoing project to protect and vitalize the environment.
