More than 12 billion paper cups are thrown into rubbish bins every year in Korea.
Should the public stop using paper cups altogether it could cut CO2 emissions by 120 billion tons every year and 1.2 million trees would be saved from the chop.
And as part of the country's environmental campaign‚ more and more Koreans are now taking the initiative to abandon paper cups in favor of using their own mugs.
This group of employees at one cosmetic company decided to use their own mugs instead of paper cups earlier this year.
And this movement is spreading rapidly..for instance‚ one coffee franchise operator in Korea has decided to adopt a system that allows customers to leave their mugs at the shop thereby reducing the inconvenience of carrying and cleaning their own mugs.
The Korean government is also considering providing active support for rolling the campaign out across the entire coffee franchise industry and encouraging the public to participate.
Such policies being considered include offering customers a discount if they use their own mugs rather than disposable cups.
