The white forsythia is grown only in Korea and has a single strain that makes it all the more rare and exquisite.
So‚ it's no surprise that it has been designated as a natural heritage.
This festival was held in North Chungcheong Province‚ which has the largest colony of these prized flowers.
The festival featured special collections exhibited by 10 farms that have studied the rare species for more than a decade.

Unlike ordinary flowers whose leaves start to bud before the flower blooms‚ the white forsythia is the other way round.
And this blossoming trait has given it the nickname‚ "the dispatch messenger of spring."
The white forsythia called "miseon-namu" in Korean also bears round fruits in the summer.
In recent years‚ research has been conducted to make the most of the flower's scent and extracts to produce dietary foods and it is drawing keen interest from both admirers and scientists.
