The spirit of protest that toppled leaders in the Arab world has continued to Libya a country 'where dissent is rarely tolerated' according to the BBC.
On Wednesday police and anti-government protesters fought one another in the coastal city of Benghazi.
Hundreds of protesters first rallied in support of jailed human rights lawyer Fathi Terbil who represents the family members of prisoners who were killed by security forces in 1996.
The activists then turned against the government and its leader of 42 years Muammar Gaddafi.
A larger "Day of Anger" protest has been planned via online social networks for Thursday.
Gaddafi is the Arab world's longest serving ruler and many young‚ educated Libyans say his days may be numbered.
Meanwhile turmoil involving thousands of protesters in Yemen has resulted in two deaths.
At least two have died in Bahrain's demonstrations.
And in Egypt the process of amending the constitution to create a new political system has begun as officials reported the death toll from Mubarak's ouster now totals at least 365 people.
