The Korean government appears to be taking steps to transform inmate correction programs in the country as the Yeongwol Correctional Institution officially began operations on Friday.
This new facility with the capacity to hold 200 prisoners has adopted a program under which inmates can freely move from their cells and activity quarters‚ study foreign languages and hold religious services.
The justice ministry hopes this new approach will help prisoners better adjust to society upon their release and also cut the operating budget as less guards are required to run the prison.
