요약정보
After five days of violent clashes on the Thai-Cambodian border troops from both sides are holding their fire as the international community is calling for an end to the skirmish.
Upon pressure from China‚ ASEAN member nations and the United States‚ Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya has agreed to meeting with Cambodia's foreign minister in a third country for talks.
The fight over 4.6 square kilometers of land surrounding the Preah Vihear temple‚ the fiercest since the early 1990s‚ has killed at least three Thais and eight Cambodians‚ and injured around 90 more civilians.
Thousands have been displaced and some 25-thousand have been forced to move into temporary shelters away from the temple.
[Interview : Aranya Nangwong‚ Thai villager] "The soldiers told us that it's still not safe because the situation is tense."
While Cambodia appealed for help from the UN Security Council‚ its request for an urgent council meeting was denied with the UN saying the problem should be resolved at a regional level.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations‚ of which Cambodia and Thailand are members‚ has expressed its willingness to help the two countries reach a peaceful solution.
[Interview : Marty Natalegawa‚ Foreign Minister
Indonesia] "Many other ASEAN countries‚ including Indonesia‚ have our own border issues to be resolved with our neighbors‚ but all of us are committed to solve this problem through peaceful means."
The latest tension sparked last week when a Cambodian court sentenced two Thai activists to up to eight years in prison for illegal entry into the disputed border area‚ triggering Thai nationalists to stage protests for a tougher stance over the border issue.
Ties between the two countries have become increasingly strained since the 900-year-old temple‚ which sits on the border of the two countries‚ was granted UN World Heritage status in July 2008.
