On Sunday Portugal President Anibal Cavaco Silva may have been granted a smooth re-election victory by the electorate but preventing a European Union-led bailout may be more rough.
53-percent of voters re-elected Silva for another five-year term.
The closest of his six competitors received just 20-percent of the vote giving the academic and former Prime Minister a mandate to continue slashing the deficit to avoid going the way of Ireland and Greece.
Silva pledged "stability‚ calm and tranquility" and indicated he had no desire to dissolve parliament and call for new elections.
