The amount of insurance payouts left unclaimed by customers in Korea is approaching 400 billion won‚ or about 360 million US dollars.
According to the General Insurance Association of Korea‚ the balance has risen steadily over the past few years to reach 391 billion won as of November.
These dormant insurance payouts expire after two years‚ after which the claimants lose the right to collect them but because they are usually a small amount of money‚ insurance companies often pay up if customers request it.
Insurers say they try to alert their customers through a yearly public service announcement and other measures‚ but they are expanding their efforts to get customers their money.
