요약정보
Last September‚ the Seogwipo municipal government asked the Jeju National Museum to excavate a cave near Cheonjiyeon Waterfall.
Since work began‚ hundreds of relics from the later part of the Old Stone Age have been found.
Stone tools discovered in the cave are believed to have been sharpened and polished and used to hunt animals and skin them.
[Interview : Oh Yeon-sook‚ Researcher
Jeju National Museum
] "Because most stones in this cave are flat and have sharp edges‚ they can be transformed into tools with only simple polishing. And we can see many such examples here."
Based on the shapes and other characteristics of the find‚ the excavation team estimates that the stone tools were made between ten thousand and twenty thousand years ago.
This is the first time that relics from the Paleolithic Age have been found on Jeju Island.
Among the ancient relics found on Jeju so far‚ the ones from Hangyeong-myeon‚ Gosan-ri are believed to be the oldest‚ and date from the early Neolithic Era.
Experts expect that the newly discovered relics will provide clues that will help solve the mystery of how people lived on the islands of Korea during the Old Stone Age .
As there are similar types of caves around the site‚ more relics are likely to be found.
Accordingly‚ the Seogwipo municipal government plans to expand the project.
[Interview : Yun Bong-taek
Cultural Asset Mgmt. Dept. of Seogwipo City
] "These are significant discoveries that have made Saengsoogoe Cave a historic site of ruins from the Old Stone Age. They will be important clues in the study of the Paleolithic Age here in Korea."
Many archeologists are now paying close attention to Jeju and its relics that trace Korean history back to the Paleolithic Age.
