The North Korean issue is expected to top the agenda during bilateral talks between US President Barack Obama and leaders of other Asian countries.
This is according to US National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer who told reporters on Thursday that Washington will work closely with its partners in the six-party talks to move towards bringing North Korea back to the nuclear negotiating table.
Hammer added that President Obama plans to listen carefully to solutions proposed by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak with regards to dealing with Pyeongyang as President Lee has handled very difficult issues related to the communist North‚ including the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan in March this year.
The NSC spokesman also stressed that Pyeongyang should take necessary steps to abandon its nuclear weapons program in order to return to the six-way talks and show authenticity in doing so.
Obama starts his 10-day visit to four Asian nations namely India‚ Indonesia‚ South Korea‚ and Japan on Friday.
He will also meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Seoul on the sidelines of the G20 Summit and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev during his stay in Yokohama‚ Japan for the APEC Summit.
