요약정보
Seoul's diplomatic efforts on bringing the recent torpedo attack by North Korea on the South Korean vessel Cheonan up with the United Nations Security Council are in full swing amid looming speculation that Seoul's UN referral would take place sometime this week.
Deputy Foreign Minister Chun Young-woo kicked off his five-day trip to the United States on Monday with an aim to fine-tune ways to work together on the naval disaster.
Chun is expected to meet with Assistant Secretary of State James Steinberg in Washington and other US officials. to discuss submitting the incident to the UN Security Council and punitive measures against the reclusive North.
The South Korean diplomat will also call on UN representatives in New York for cooperation in dealing with the Cheonan matter and participate in events hosted by the Korea Society.
Back here in Seoul‚ US congressional official Jim Webb‚ who adopted a resolution last week that calls for the international community to take action against the North in the US senate‚ arrived in the capital to meet with Seoul officials including Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan.
Sources say his visit is aimed at showing support for the South Korean government and vowing US congressional legislation for sanctions against the North over the Cheonan incident.
Meanwhile‚ a group of four Russian experts on naval affairs also arrived in Seoul to examine the outcome of the international investigation.
Officials here said they will make a report by early next week based on briefings about the results of the international probe‚ inspecting the wreckage of the ship‚ as well as the site where the sinking took place.
The visit was requested by the South Korean government which believes persuading Russia‚ a veto-wielding council member‚ would be significant to Seoul's efforts to slap new or tougher sanctions on the North.
