"Let's walk on barley plants. Let's step on barley plants."
A group of elementary school students pace around a barley field hand-in-hand.
They march in circles and call out to the barley plants‚ as if to wake them up from a long winter sleep.
What they are doing is called 'treading' on barley plants‚ a long-time custom and the first springtime task for barley-growers.
Right about this time of the year‚ the earth starts thawing and undermines the roots of barley that have been growing beneath the snow during the winter.
And‚ the ground has to be trodden on in order to resettle the roots.
[Interview : Kim Young-eun‚ Student ] "We walked on the barley plants so that they can grow healthy."
[Interview : Cho Han-na‚ Student ] "I hope the plants grow healthy so we can also become healthy by having barley."
Treading down the barley helps the growth and development of the plants‚ and also helps to sustain them through the drought season.
[Interview : Choi Jae-sung‚ Researcher
National Institute of Crop Science
] "Right about the 15th day of the lunar new year‚ it's customary to tread on the barley plants so that the roots can reorient in the ground and yield a good harvest."
With the help of school children‚ the barley fields will encounter a spring-awakening and promise a bumper harvest this fall.
