Whether it be the financial district in Manhattan or a bustling market in New Delhi or in this case a political prison camp in reclusive North Korea love seems to be the common language that connects us all.
The musical 'Yoduk Story' is set on concentration camp No. 15 in the North Korean city of Yoduk.
The story uses the universal concept of love to convey the gruesome reality of political prisoners in the communist state.
The creator of this story‚ Jung Sung-san‚ himself‚ grew up in North Korea before escaping to the South in 1994… and says he wrote and directed the play on behalf of the thousands who have been imprisoned‚ tortured and killed in detention camps.
However‚ the story is also a very personal one for the 41-year-old director.
[Interview : Jung Sung-san‚ Director of musical 'Yoduk Story' ] "News of my father being publicly executed at a prison camp in North Korea motivated me to create the production and make this issue be known."
The musical about love‚ torture and survival in the prison is a story of a female inmate and an officer based on testimonies of several North Korean defectors and the director himself‚ who was sent to a concentration camp for listening to a South Korean radio broadcast back in 1994.
And the playwright says 'Yoduk Story' was intended for an international audience from the very beginning.
[Interview : Jung Sung-san‚ Director of musical 'Yoduk Story'] "I created the musical for the world stage because as a person from the North‚ I do not think enough attention is given to people in North Korea and the human rights situation there."
Since its debut in 2006‚ the play has undergone a number of modifications finally coming to this year's world version.
Following its performance in Seoul‚ which runs until the end of this month the production is headed for a world tour starting in North America‚ where it is scheduled to be staged at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
And‚ in August this year‚ the cast of 'Yoduk Story' will perform on an outdoor stage in Auschwitz‚ Poland.
This time around‚ the North Korean defector-turned-director has his heart set on a bigger goal.
[Interview : Jung Sung-san‚ Director of musical 'Yoduk Story' ] "Through our world tour‚ we hope to raise awareness of the human rights situation in North Korea. I would like to gather prominent figures of different countries for a North Korean human rights conference with the ultimate goal of dismantling all concentration camps in the North."
And the tale of Yoduk of the brutality‚ the suffering‚ the people is set to continue until no one is tortured at political prisons.
