요약정보
Starting next week a group of kindergarteners and first graders at a primary school in Australia's southeastern state of New South Wales will learn most of their subjects in the Korean language.
In line with the state government's efforts to strengthen its presence in the Asia-Pacific‚ officials there are working to introduce some of the major languages spoken in the region to kids during early childhood education.
And in the first trial of this initiative‚ a public school in the West Kempsey area will begin offering an intensive curriculum mostly taught in Korean for 19 kindergarteners and 10 first graders who have signed up.
With the exception of English and math‚ students will take all their subjects in Korean‚ for a minimum of 90 minutes per day.
While some 30 percent of registrants are the children of Korean parents‚ for the rest of the students the language is not their mother tongue.
Korean teachers on site promote the program with the help of a recent study that showed children educated in multiple languages gain greater social competitiveness in the future.
Other languages like Japanese‚ Chinese and Indonesian are also slated to appear in similar programs across the state.
