요약정보
A powerful earthquake rippled through Haiti Tuesday afternoon toppling buildings and burying hundreds of people.
The 7.0 magnitude quake whose epicenter was only 15 kilometers from the capital Port-au-Prince was the most powerful earthquake to hit the Caribbean country in more than 200 years.
At least 24 strong afterquakes some measuring around 5.9 followed the tremor.
As of early Wednesday even a rough estimate of casualties was not available although one official was cited as saying that "hundreds of casualties would be a serious understatement."

The earthquake brought down several buildings including the country's presidential palace and UN installations.
The French government said that more than 200 French travelers who were staying at the Montana Hotel remain missing and rescue workers are searching for the bodies of UN workers in the region.
And concerns are rising as four Korean travelers are believed to be trapped under the rubble of a collapsed five-star hotel.
[Interview : Kim Yoo-chul
Ministry of Foreign Affairs] "We cannot rule out the possibility of an accident because the hotel collapsed after the Korean travelers had checked-in."
According to Korea's Foreign Ministry there are currently 70 Koreans in the impoverished Caribbean country of which 60 are permanent residents and 10 travelers.
The Korean government has set up an on-site task force team which will be led by a Foreign Ministry official in charge of the safety of overseas Korean Nationals and Korea's ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
And in an effort to accelerate rescue operations nations around the world have offered their full assistance.
[Interview : Hillary Clinton‚ US Secretary of State
] "The United States is offering our full assistance to Haiti and others in the region. We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and our prayers are with the people who have suffered‚ their families and their loved ones."
Canada and France have expressed their grief and the Venezuelan government has pledged to send military planes loaded with necessities as well as 50 rescue workers.
Haiti which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere has suffered from a series of destructive natural disasters in the past.
Some 9-thousand UN police and troops are currently stationed in the region for peacekeeping purposes after its president was ousted in 2004.
