요약정보
A powerful earthquake rippled through Haiti Tuesday afternoon toppling buildings and burying hundreds of people.
The 7.0 magnitude quake whose epicenter was only 15 kilometers from the capital Port-au-Prince was the most powerful earthquake to hit the Caribbean country in more than 200 years.
As of early Wednesday even a rough estimate of casualties was not available although one official was cited as saying that "hundreds of casualties would be a serious understatement."
Many sat in ruins crying and screaming for help after being stripped of their homes by the disaster.
The earthquake brought down offices‚ hotels‚ houses and shops and among the collapsed buildings were the country's presidencial palace and UN installations.
And in an effort to accelerate rescue operations the United States and the international community have offered their full assistance.
[Interview : Hillary Clinton‚ US Secretary of State
] "The United States is offering our full assistance to Haiti and others in the region. We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and our prayers are with the people who have suffered‚ their families and their loved ones."
Meanwhile‚ Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that seven out of 70 Koreans currently in the impoverished Caribbean country could not be reached since the quake occured.
Concerns are rising as four people were confirmed to have been staying at a hotel toppled during the tremor.
Haiti which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere has suffered from a series of destructive natural disasters in the past.
Some 9-thousand UN police and troops are currently stationed in the region for peacekeeping purposes after its president was ousted in 2004.
