China has once again announced it will increase the flexibility of its currency exchange rate hinting of a possible appreciation of the Chinese yuan also known as the renminbi.
This comes after the People's Bank of China said a month ago it will keep its currency "stable" raising speculations of a possible revaluation.
International pressure is mounting over the low-valued yuan which has been pegged to the weakening US dollar since the outbreak of the financial crisis.
The weak yuan is creating price competitiveness with Chinese exporters which at the same time serves as a disadvantage to other nations.
China's Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun says while the country will widen the yuan's flexibility it will be at a "controllable level based on the market demand with reference to a basket of currencies."
Such remarks were made a few days in advance of the 12th China-European Union Summit to be held in Nanjing in Jiangsu Province next Monday where foreign exchange rates are expected to be the center of discussions.
A day before the summit EU policymakers are scheduled to have talks with with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao‚ the country's central bank officials and the Ministry of Finance as well as the National Development and Reform Commission.
