US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged the government of Myanmar to free the country's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.
The call came during Mrs. Clinton's meeting with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Manila and comes ahead of President Obama's talks with Myanmarese Prime Minister Thein Sein at the US-ASEAN summit in Singapore this Sunday.
Clinton and Arroyo discussed the release of the Nobel laureate‚ who has been under house arrest imposed by the ruling junta for the past 20 years‚ following her victory in the 1990 general elections.
With Myanmar set to hold elections next year‚ the first to be held in two decades‚ Secretary Clinton pledged to continue calls for Suu Kyi's unconditional release.
