April 8th‚ 2008 is a day to be remembered in Korea's short history of space exploration. Over a year has passed since Korea‚ or rather Korea's first astronaut Lee So-yeon took her first step into space.

However Korea's technological prowess still falls far behind the public's increased interest. Lee So-yeon had to hitchhike on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft for her mission. How far has Korea come in aerospace technology
Arirang Today visited the leading research facility in Korea‚ the Satellite Technology Research Center at KAIST. Here they are currently working on the Science Technology Satellite 2.

KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center] "This will be the 5th satellite to be made ever since Korea started developing space technology 20 years ago. For small scale satellites‚ SaTReC manages the whole development process including design‚ assembly and testing. It happens to be one of the few facilities around the world with such capabilities."
Clad in baggy cleanroom suits‚ we entered the laboratory to see how satellites are really made. STSAT-2 is a low orbit satellite which will be launched today on the NARO rocket.

Future Technology Team‚ SaTReC] "This sensor is called a star tracker. It determines the satellite's position by sensing the stars in the sky."
"So it will be installed in the satellite that's going up today[Interview : Cha Won-ho‚ Researcher
SaTReC] "I'm applying a bonding gel to make sure the binding doesn't break loose."

Once in orbit‚ STSAT-2 will operate for 2 years‚ taking measurements of the Earth's radiation‚ atmospheric conditions and the orbital paths of satellites. This is an exact copy of STSAT-2. This one is scheduled to go up next January. It comes with a complete array of space gear including solar cells‚ star trackers and a plasma propulsion engine.

KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center] "Up until now we had to go abroad to launch our satellites up in the sky. This is the first satellite to go up from Korean soil‚ at the Naro Space Center in Goheung."
Naro Space Center‚ Korea's first stellar launch pad. The Naro Space Center was completed earlier this year. It has a main control room and all sorts of equipment to monitor a launch. Korea's first satellite launching rocket is anticipated to lift-off here today‚ with its nose pointed between Japan and the Phillipines. Last April‚ Arirang Today visited the Naro Space Center.
And this is it! Korea's first carrier rocket‚ NARO!

Korea Aerospace Research Institute ] "This is the first meeting between the fully assembled rocket and the launch pad which
finished construction in March. A complete rehearsal of the launch scenario will be conducted."
NARO is a two stage rocket. The launch rehearsal was conducted with a replica of NARO which is same in all manners except for the engine. Korea has not developed the appropriate technology for liquid propulsion systems‚ so the first stage has been made with Russian technology.

Korea Aerospace Research Institute ] "From now‚ our research will concentrate on acquiring the technology to build liquid propellant rocket engines‚ which is something that we cannot do on our own yet."
