Teachers in England who are not up to par will soon be let go.
According to the BBC‚ Children's Secretary Ed Balls announced earlier this week in an education White Paper named "Building a 21st Century Schools System" that the government plans to require teachers to have licenses and renew them every five years.
Teachers will need to show they are keeping up-to-date in their demonstrative classes in front of school administrators to have their licenses renewed.
The children's secretary added that the latest education sector overhaul plan is aimed at improving the overall school environment and transferring power to school leaders.
Not surprisingly‚ the Association of Teachers and Lecturers was against the plan with the union's head calling it a "bureaucratic nightmare."
Meanwhile‚ the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers welcomed the decision saying it proves teaching is "a high status qualification."
The licensing scheme will first be applied to teachers who are newly hired from September of next year and then be expanded to all teachers in the country.
England is not the only country that's after reforming its public education system.
The United States is pushing for a similar move‚ while Japan introduced the teacher license starting this year and put in place the teacher evaluation system that would decide teachers' pay back in 2000.
Observers say such a trend should send a message to the Korean government that's trying to prop up public schools and prevent parents from spending massive amounts of money on private education.
