President Lee Myung-bak is set to visit Central Asia to sit down with the leaders of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan next week.
The Presidential Office announced plans for the two state visits on Monday and they are to focus on boosting energy cooperation with the countries that are rich in natural resources including crude oil and gas.
Arriving in Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent on Sunday President Lee will sit down with President Islam Karimov on Monday.
The leaders will discuss issues related to the participation of Korean companies in developing the Surgil gas field.
During his visit to the country last year Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and his counterpart launched a joint venture between the two countries' state-run gas corporations.
Currently the "Uz-Kor Gas Chemical Company" is developing the 96 million tons of gas deposits at the Surgil field with a target of beginning production as early as 2014.
The summit talks will also touch on plans to renovate Uzbekistan's Navoiy Airport which the country aims to develop as a regional logistics hub.
Moving on to Kazakhstan Tuesday President Lee will continue his focus on energy diplomacy.
During the summit with President Nursultan Nazarbayev Wednesday the Korean leader
is expected to discuss jointly developing a thermal power plant and the Zambil crude oil deposit in the Caspian Sea.
