President Lee Myung-bak is in Beijing to attend the seventh Asia-Europe meeting along with more than 40 leaders from both regions.
Also on the sidelines of ASEM the President is scheduled to hold separate meetings with his counterparts from various nations.
Arirang's Presidential Office Correspondent Kim Bumsoo joins me now on the line from Beijing.
Bumsoo let's start with President Lee's agenda for the day.
Sunhee President Lee started Friday morning by attending a breakfast meeting with the "ASEAN Plus Three" member nations.
There the leaders from the association of ten Southeast Asian nations and Korea‚ Japan and China discussed cooperative measures to cope with the current global financial turmoil.
The ASEAN Plus Three nations launched bilateral swap arrangements called the Chiang Mai Initiative or CMI to overcome the Asian financial crisis in the late 90s.
And this morning to deal with the current financial challenges member states discussed accelerating the raising of multi-lateral CMI funds agreed upon in May to be approximately 80 billion US dollars.
And while discussing the establishment of a new economic watchdog agency to strengthen surveillance of member states' intra-regional activities President Lee called for greater participation of newly emerging economies in the process of improving the current financial regulatory system.
Right.
Bumsoo I understand the President also held bilateral talks with the Japanese Premier as well as the Vietnamese Prime Minister SEPARATELY that is earlier today Yes Sunhee after the gathering of the ASEAN Plus Three members President Lee and Japan's new Prime Minister Taro Aso extended their talks to a bilateral meeting.
In their first summit the two leaders agreed to restore bilateral shuttle diplomacy between Korea and Japan.
And they discussed collaboration in the face of the current global financial situation including a more active sharing of their intelligence on global financial and economic prospects.
Also Lee and Aso touched upon their respective North Korea policies and affirmed their cooperation to denuclearize the North after the removal of Pyeongyang from the US sponsors of terrorism list.
And President Lee has just completed a summit with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung .
The two sides focused their talks on improving bilateral ties in economic cooperation.
What is the agenda for the rest of the day Well‚ Sunhee he is about to attend two more bilateral meetings with the Danish and Polish prime ministers.
Then he will participate in the main Asia-Europe meeting where Cheong Wa Dae officials say President Lee will voice a need for establishing new international organizations to oversee global financial activities.
