Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang has claimed a landslide victory in Saturday's parliamentary election boosting its chance of taking power when a new president is elected in March.
The country's Central Election Commission says the KMT which favors closer links with China won 51 percent of the popular vote securing 81 of the 113 seats at stake.
The ruling Democratic Progressive Party‚ meanwhile‚ garnered only 37 percent of the vote.
The DPP's popularity has fallen amid President Chen Shui-bian's focus on the island's sovereignty and allegations of corruption in his family.
