Landslides triggered by torrential rains have killed at least 40 people in Uganda's mountainous eastern region.
According to local media reports‚ the landslides‚ which occurred on Monday‚ buried seven villages in Bulambuli district which is in the foothills of Mount Elgon and borders Kenya.
Red Cross workers and villagers are still digging to retrieve bodies and salvage whatever they can from buried houses in the region.
The death toll is expected to rise‚ and many fear that famine could follow due to crop damage caused by months of heavy rain.
