The fighting between Karen forces and government troops broke out in the eastern border town of Myawaddy on Sunday.
Over 10-thousand people had reportedly fled across the border‚ to the Thai city of Mae Sot by Monday.
Most of those crossing into Thailand were women and children.
Military officials told the Bangkok Post at least ten people were injured in the fighting.
Although shells fell on the Thai side of the border‚ the Thai military reportedly did not return fire.
[Interview : Muang Soe Hi‚ Refugee from Myanmar] "The fighting started around 9 o'clock. A rock landed in front of my house around 10 o'clock. The explosion injured six people. There was fire in parts of Myawaddy when I fled the town."
Meanwhile‚ Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told reporters that he expects fighting to continue until the new government is set up and pledged to tighten security along the border.
[Interview : Kitisak Komolsak‚ District Chief of Maesot] "Latest reports predict that there will be more violence this afternoon. Our soldiers are on full alert. More people from the other side of the border are still crossing to the Thai side."
Myanmar's government army says it must retain a significant role to keep ethnic forces from trying to divide the country which raises concerns for further violent clashes between the two forces.
