China's Three Gorges Dam is facing a major test of its ability to control flooding as torrential rains are pushing water levels along its upper tributaries to dangerously high levels.
On Tuesday morning the peak flow of water hitting the giant reservoir on the Yangtze River‚ China's longest‚ reached 150 meters just 25 meters shy of its maximum capacity‚ according to Chinese media reports.
As rains continue the water level in the dam is expected to reach 165 meters which is higher than in 1998 when devastating floods along the Yangtze killed over 4-thousand people and forced around 18 million others to seek shelter.
Seventy thousand cubic meters of water entered the dam each second and gushed out at 40-thousand cubic meters per second reducing the flow of water into the river downstream and lowering the risk of flooding.
The Chinese dam began operating in 1992 with environmentalists warning the reservoir could turn into a cesspool of sewage and chemicals or silt.
But the Chinese government justified its decision to forge ahead citing its massive power generation capacity and ability to control flooding.
Huge areas of southern China have been pounded by weeks of heavy rain causing flooding and landslides.
Thousands of people have been evacuated in cities and villages along the Yangtze and its tributaries.
At least 146 people have died since the beginning of this month due to the torrential rains while another 40 are missing.
On Monday Guang'an city in southwestern Sichuan province saw its worst flooding since 1847.
More than 1.3 million people have been evacuated in southern China because of the rainfall while a second round of heavy rains are forecast to hit the region later this week.
