As ongoing political strife against Thailand's government threatens to spiral even more out of control Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej rejected demands to step down and instead called for a national referendum.
Samak announced the decision Thursday saying that he would not resign in order to protect the country's democracy.
Thailand's Cabinet agreed to the referendum hours later but‚ will have to wait for the Senate's approval of the bill.
Should the law be passed‚ the referendum would take place over a one-month period‚ during which the Thai people would decide whether or not the prime minister should step down and also‚ whether the anti-government protests would continue.
However protestors belonging to the People's Alliance for Democracy see this as a last-ditch effort to buy more time saying that they will continue to demonstrate until Samak is out of office.
Many view his party as a "puppet" for exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra‚ who was ousted in a 2006 military coup.
Thousands in the group consisting mainly of middle to upper-class royalists‚ businessmen‚ and activists have descended on Government House in Bangkok‚ the past 10 days crippling its ability to govern the country.
Some alliance members also claim a referendum would not be credible‚ as Samak's party has overwhelming support from rural citizens some of whose votes may be won won through bribery.
There are more questions than answers on how Thailand's latest round of political turmoil may turn out be it a military coup‚ Samak's resignation or an intervention by its revered king.
